Spaghetti Western Postage Stamps

Since 2005 the old railway station of Almería has been bolted shut hoping for a better future while waiting for the arrival of the AVE and the underground. Even though it continues to gather dust it has not been forgotten when it comes to those who value this important architectural monument which is considered as a site of cultural interest, and now is the image of a new postage stamp in the Architecture series, one that seeks to honor this activity and to inform Spanish society emblematic works of this art, which often are not well known.

On January 27, 2010 the Spanish postal system issued a circulation of 300,000 copies € 0.35 stamp with the image of the historic 1895 station, based on a photograph of Dominic Leiva’s, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, masterpiece. It is recalled that the main facade, 54 meters long, consists of a building in three sections, with the central made of iron and glass. This part of the building, gives access to the station and has a spectacular stained glass window flanked on both sides by two towers of stone and brick covered with glazed ceramic.

The station is included in the Ministry of Culture’s list for the title of 'National Monuments'. At the end of 1988 it was closed for rehabilitation and reform to modernize and improve the location for services, which resulted in some changes to the original structure. Thus, in the lobby a mosaic motif showing the railroad station, twelve square meters by the painter Luis Cañadas Almeria. In the upper wall of the lobby remains a mosaic with the image of the Virgen del Mar, patron saint of the city. The station was used for the location of the Mesa Verde train station in Sergio Leone’s “Duck You Sucker”.

To date they have issued more than twenty labels dedicated exclusively to 'Architecture' dedicated to structures such as the Casa Batlló in Barcelona, the textile factory Tarrassa, Vapor Aymerich, the Deposit Library of the Sun, in Albacete, the Teatro Champs Elysees, in Bilbao, the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas, and the Bus Station Casar, in Cáceres.

In subsequent years stamps will be issued concerning the chapel bells of Valleacerón, Almadenejos; El Capricho de Comillas, Cantabria Santa Caterina Market, Barcelona, Vizcaya Bridge, Las Arenas, Portugalete, Bilbao, or the T-4, Airport Madrid-Barajas. - ‘The Voice of Almería’ Lola González

  1. I spent hours hanging around this beautiful station, on my first visit to Almeria.
It was a great intro' for a fledgling location hunter.
Also used in 'A Bullet for the General', 5 years before 'Dynamite/Sucker'!
Great to see it has been so well maintained, and not just for SW enthusiasts!
